Urinary Leg Bags provide an efficient solution for urine collection during the daytime.
For patients who want to lead an active lifestyle along with the use of urine drainage bags, a leg bag is the best option. It can be easily worn under clothing, providing complete privacy.
Leg bags are versatile. They are available in many different styles and sizes. Even the straps come in many different styles.
What is a urinary leg bag?
Urinary leg bag is a smaller size urine collection bag.
Urinary Drainage Leg Bag has a soft and comfortable vinyl construction to contour to the patient’s body. Urine Leg Bag safely secures to the leg with two adjustable elastic leg straps. It easily connects to any Foley catheter, and the leak-proof seams ensure fluid containment.
What is a urinary leg bag used for?
These urinary drainage bags attach to a catheter that transfers urine from the bladder. These devices serve people with urinary incontinence (leakage), urinary retention, surgery that made a catheter necessary, or another health problem.
What is the difference between the overnight drainage bag and the urinary leg bag?
The biggest difference between an overnight drainage bag and a urinary leg bag is the overall size of the product. The other important difference is that a leg bag is meant to be worn and an overnight bag is meant to hang next to your bed while you are sleeping or resting.
The leg bag has straps that go around your thigh or calf, these straps hold the leg bag in place. You can easily wear pants over your leg bag and some leg bags are designed so they can be worn with shorts.
What size leg bag should I choose?
Selecting a urine leg bag will be primarily dependent upon what your doctor recommends and personal preferences.
The smaller bags accommodate active users, allowing more freedom of movement, better concealment, and easier securement, but will also require changing more frequently. Larger urine collection bags accommodate less active users, offering more storage and less frequent draining, meaning they can go longer without changing the bag.
How to wear a catheter leg bag?
Urinary Leg bags are usually attached to the leg or thigh using fixation devices, such as leg bag straps or a leg bag sleeve.
Make sure the bag is always lower than your bladder. This keeps urine from flowing back into your bladder.
How to empty the Leg Bag?
Always empty the leg bag in a clean bathroom. Make sure at no point do the catheter tubings or pouch touch any bathroom surfaces. Empty the bag into the toilet at least twice or thrice a day or when the bag is third to half full.
1. Firstly wash your hands well with soap and water to prevent infecting the urinary catheter and bag.
2. Open the tap at the bottom of the bag and drain it into a toilet or suitable container.
3. Don’t touch the tip of the valve or let it touch the toilet or container.
4. Close the tap after you have drained the bag.
5. Wash your hands again.
How long can you use a leg bag?
Leg bags connected to the catheter form a 'closed system', which prevents bacteria getting into the system and reduces the risk of infection. The leg bag should only be disconnected from the catheter when the bag needs replacing.
It is recommended that you change the bags once a week. However, if a bag becomes damaged, difficult to empty, or uncomfortable to wear, you can change it sooner.
Wash your hands before and after connecting, or changing, the drainage bags.
